The Presenter - PAULINE FIELD

Pauline Field, Senior Consultant and Chief Operating Officer of International FieldWorks, Inc., a global management consulting agency, is responsible for the assignments and management of some 900 senior professionals throughout the world. A consultant for over twenty years, her specialties are performance improvement, conflict resolution, business development and executive coaching. She has consulted with major corporations, not-for-profit organizations, small companies and government agencies worldwide.

She has redesigned companies, department by department, kept companies out of the courts through resolution of conflicts, and assisted executives in growing and expanding their businesses. Her understanding of business comes both from academic training and from the practical experience of having been an employee, contractor, vendor and owner. It has also allowed her to develop her leadership and consensus building skills.

She has published numerous articles and CDs on business practices and management skills, has appeared on a number of radio and television shows and is a sought after speaker. The world’s largest privately-funded direct relief organization appointed her as Advisor to their Refocusing Committee. Her Bachelor’s degree is from California State University, Northridge and she completed her post-graduate work at Cornell University in New York.

Design Pod Logo Contest!

(I had to get you here one way or another!)

We're holding a contest to see who can come up with the best logo for Design Pod. The winning logo will be featured printed on t-shirts and canvas totes and featured prominently on our blog with design credit.

The design may also appear on http://www.designspongeonline.com/ in conjunction with Grace's visit some time in March.

The goal is to capture the spirit of our Pod group with an eye toward future growth and expansion.

You can submit as many design as you like.

Have a cool concept but don't fancy yourself a designer? No problem. Submit whatever you have.

Entries can be submitted via email to Beth or posted on the blog.

All designs must be sumbitted by March 17 via email or in person at the March 19 Pod meeting.
The shy ones may submit anonymously.

We'll post all the designs at the March Pod meeting and cast votes into a box. The winner will be announced on the blog the following day.

There is so much talent in this group I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Anna Sui vs. Forever 21

Anna Sui gave these t-shirts as a part of the goodie bags at her Spring 08 show. The shirt bears the faces of Don and Jin Chang, the owners of Forever 21. The shirt says, “thou shalt not steal”.

Side note: Of course it's the principal, but in my opinion, shoppers that are buying Anna Sui are more than likely not shopping at Forever 21. And if they are, it's not to replace what they were going to buy from Anna Sui. But I thought this was a brilliant way to stand up for yourself!

Useful legal info: "You can’t copyright your clothing designs themselves, but you can copyright certain design elements of your clothing. The distinction between the clothing itself and such design elements has to do with some basic principles of copyright law. Copyright extends to original, non-useful works of authorship, fixed in a tangible medium of expression. “Non-useful” means that you cannot obtain a copyright on a work that has a functional purpose. The so-called “useful article” doctrine is a barrier to copyrighting clothing designs, because clothing is considered to be “inherently functional.” But certain elements of clothing designs can be copyrighted. The design embossed or imprinted on textiles or fabrics—as opposed to the style, shape, or pattern of the finished garment—may be entitled to copyright protection. This means that designs or elements of a fashion may be copyrightable to the extent that the element can be conceptually or physically separated from the utilitarian nature of the article. - Jeff Neuburger, Business Attorney
